API stands for Application Program Interface. The API is the means by which different service providers share vital information about their services with a central software platform that then distributes suitable choices to potential users. The information about reserved trips is likewise distributed back to the service provider.
Many APIs will become familiar over time and represent little time and effort to connect to central platforms at a variety of locations. Other providers, such as a one-off city-owned bike share or parking house, will face a one time cost of writing an API.
